The Observatory is located in Southeast Portland in the Montavilla neighborhood. It was opened by two couples in 2008 who had years in the restaurant business.
An instant success, The Observatory expanded a few years later to feature a twenty-one and over bar called the Over and Out. They offer the same menu as The Observatory as well as TVs, pool and pinball. It is a favorite hangout for friends.
They feature full menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as Signature Cocktails, a popular Happy Hour and desserts to die for. They have over sixteen hundred reviews online with a four-point-five-star rating.
Located in the Albert Arts District is Pine State Biscuits. The three men who opened the restaurant set out on a quest to make the best biscuits in Portland. They held “biscuit tasting parties” for months before they found the perfect recipe. Before they opened their restaurant, they would get a booth at The Portland Farmer’s Market and grew a loyal following of biscuit lovers. People would stand in lines as long as thirty people to eat their biscuits and gravy.
After two seasons of success at the farmers market, they knew they could open a restaurant. They opened in February 2008 and were delighted to see there was a line the fans that wrapped around the block. They expanded in July 2010 with a second Pine State Biscuits that was double the space of their first restaurant.
These three Southern boys are amazed at their success. There are over two thousand three hundred positive posts on the world wide web. They even have a line of clothes and hats that can be purchased on the web or at their store.
Located within walking distance to many historic landmarks in downtown Portland is Lechon. The restaurant is also located in a historic building known as the Smith’s Block Building. This family style dining restaurant offers views of the Tom McCall Waterfront Park and the Willamette River.
Lechon has a thirteen-hundred-gallon aquarium where guests can enjoy watching jellyfish and look at the beautiful coral reef. They have an open kitchen so diners can watch their food being prepared and enjoy the four-story atrium.
Chef Jaco Smith was born into a large family of farmers in South Africa who raised sheep, cattle and grew grain. He grew up helping his mother in the kitchen when she prepared large family meals. The tradition of cooking meat on a braai in South Africa is compared to most people idea of cooking on a barbecue. However, cooking on a braai is with fire and coals that serves as a place for the family to gather after the food is prepared and eaten.
Chef Smith’s menu includes things like grilled octopus, 28-day-dry-aged ribeye with chimichurri, homemade empanadas and refreshing ceviche’s. They boast about their eleven hundred raving posts on the internet with close to a five-star rating.
